Habit Change Quiz

This Habit Change Quiz is based on the work of Professor James O. Prochaska at the University of Rhode Island. He developed the Transtheoretical Model of Change in 1977.  The model is based on five stages of change developed from years of studying various approaches to psychotherapy.  The process of habit change progresses through the following five stages:

  1. Precontemplation – “I can’t change this behavior” or I won’t change this behavior.”
  2. Contemplation– “I might change this behavior.” (Individuals define their motivators, obstacles and solutions.)
  3. Preparation (0-3 months) – “I will change this behavior.” (The individual creates guidelines and seeks support for the attempt at habit change.)
  4. Action (3-6 months) – “I am changing this behavior.” (People in this stage often relapse.  The ability to recover from such setbacks can lead to success in habit change.)
  5. Maintenance (6+ months) – “I still am changing this behavior.” (Practicing the new habit(s) leads to the new habit becoming part of the everyday life.
