Mental Coach?

What is Mental Coaching?

The search term “Mental Coach” has recently been exploding on Google. As an experienced life coach I had never heard the term until now. I know many life coaches who specialize in a variety of fields. For example: business coaches use their training and experience to help entrepreneurs. Career coaches help people who want to advance in their field or change fields. Coaches like me help people with a wide variety of career, grief, retirement, relationship and spiritual issues.

I had never heard of a mental coach before. So I asked myself, “What is a mental coach?”

Surely people looking for psychological or psychiatric help with mental health issues would use one of those terms if they were seeking therapy. Perhaps with the many profound disruptions to our lives brought on by the Covid pandemic, people are feeling unusually fearful, isolated and unhappy. They don’t feel mentally ill. They just want help.

Every Coach is a Mental Coach

Actually the rise of a term like “Mental Coach” should not come as a surprise in times like this. But here is the rub: every coach I know of is a mental coach. Not just every life coach, even every athletic coach. All coaches inform, educate, counsel, motivate and inspire. In addition, they help clarify goals, overcome obstacles, boost confidence, measure progress and hold people accountable. Thus, every coach deals mainly, if not exclusively, in the realm of the mind.

If you are a person searching for a mental coach, you might want to think in more specific terms about what you want a life coach to help you achieve. On the other hand, perhaps when you confront the array of life coaching resources available, you might see something that just feels right to you. Also remember, coaching should be all about YOUR dreams, YOUR issues, YOUR goals, YOUR needs. Coaching should not put you in a category or involve you in a preplanned regimen.

I Am A Mental Coach

So I guess I just discovered after all these years of coaching, that I am a mental coach. As a coach I can tell you that anybody looking for a mental coach (or any life coach) should look for a coach who is:

  • Experienced
  • Credentialed
  • Compatible (with you)
  • Available (to meet your schedule)
  • Professional

To help people learn about life coaching and my approach to coaching, I have built this website to provide a view into my coaching methods and interests. My credentials and a sample of my client reviews are also here. Feel free to explore my site at your leisure.

But I would never advise someone to commit to a life coach without talking to them first. That is why I offer a free discovery call with potential clients. This discovery call is a way to learn more about a coach’s approach and personality. It is a vital first step for you to see if we are a “good fit.”
