Mindfulness Self-Assessment

Mindfulness remains a popular topic at Life Coaching With a Smile. We have several articles (listed below) on what mindfulness is, its benefits and how to practice it. We added this Mindfulness Self-Assessment to provide you with a way to figure out how mindful you really are. Of course, you can use this tool over and over during your journey into mindfulness to determine your progress.

I find that it can take a lot of time and effort to understand what mindfulness is. It can take even more time to learn how to practice it effectively.

“The concept of mindfulness, of being fully aware and present in the moment but without any value judgments, worrying, or rumination, can be a tough one to grasp.” – positivepsychology

Measuring Mindfulness

Mindfulness can also be hard to measure. Nevertheless, researchers developed self-assessment tools. They put a ruler to how well an individual mind has incorporated the concept of mindfulness.

We adapted this Mindfulness Self-Assessment from the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory. (Walach, H., Buchheld, N., Buttenmuller, V., Kleinknecht, N., Schmidt, S. (2006). Measuring Mindfulness–The Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI). Personality and Individual Differences, 40, 1543-1555)

“Researchers Walach, Buchheld, Buttenmüller, Kleinknecht, and Schmidt created the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory in 2006. At that time they found that no other measure of mindfulness captured the concept.

Their view of mindfulness can be summarized as a process of regulating one’s attention. Approaching experiences with an open and nonjudgmental awareness. It includes curiosity and openness to the experience (Walach et al., 2006).

This perspective is similar to other views on mindfulness. But it encompasses more than some other measures. This is especially due to the addition of curiosity.” – positivepsychology

Correlations with other measures of self-awareness and self-knowledge confirm the validity of the assessment.
